saddle stitching Catalogs

Even with constant emails and social media notifications, the power of well designed print still reins supreme. The facts are beginning to point to catalogs and booklets as one of the most effective marketing strategies.

In early July stories began to circulate on the internet that Amazon would be releasing a holiday toy catalog. According to Bloomberg the catalog is expected to be sent to millions of homes as well as handed out at Amazon’s Whole Foods Markets. The move is seen as a way for Amazon to capture more of the toy market after the demise of Toys”R”Us. For us, the more interesting thing is the method.

There is just something about a catalog or a booklet that creates a valuable experience for a customer. Even with the ubiquity of phones and tablets, the physical experience of a booklet still creates magic. Catalogs and booklets get us away from our screens and create a different kind of experience. There is also a nostalgic element. Receiving a toy catalog at Christmas, or even the annual Ikea catalog breeds excitement. They are personal and tactile moments. Special, even though we could certainly jump on a screen anytime and find the same products.

This isn’t just a touchy-feely way of promoting print. Marketing research is increasingly pointing to the power of these physical experiences. A 2017 survey by the firm InfoTrends revealed remarkable data about customer engagement with print catalogs.

Key findings such as:

Over 70% of those surveyed who received a catalog opened and read it.

80% who received a catalog visited a retail store or online platform because of it.

60% stated that they preferred print over digital (just under 10% said they preferred digital over print).

So what does this mean for your company or organization?

If emotional engagement and stirring your customers to action matters to you, then it is time to consider a catalog or booklet as a part of your marketing efforts. Research like that cited above continues to point to the power of print over digital advertising to connect with  customers. Even if you have never considered such a large print project before, you have the opportunity to create something people will remember.

Imagine if customers looked forward to hearing from your organization the way we look forward to toy or Ikea catalogs.
